Ed Beck's Pressbooks

Simple Book Publishing

About this site

I started developing this site in November of 2017. OER is a huge and growing sub-field in educational technology. Creating and maintaining high-quality resources in a format that is easily shared and highly accessible is of every college’s collective interest. While there are commercial products that do this, this site is running core Pressbooks, an open source Content Mangement System (CMS) built on top of WordPress architecture. This site is hosted on the Amazon Web Services cloud hosting.

I am in debt to the great creators and compilers of OER materials such as the BC Open Textbooks project, the University of Minnesota OpenTextbook Library, and the Open SUNY textbooks project as well as to the open source developers of Pressbooks.

Pressbooks

Pressbooks is a GPL-licensed plugin that transforms a WordPress Multi-Site install into a book production Content Management System, which exports in multiple formats: ebooks, webbooks, print-ready PDF*, and various XML flavours. Pressooks makes significant changes to:

  • admin interface (customized for books and structured documents)
  • web presentation layer (customized for books and structured documents); and
  • export routines.

PressBooks web/ebook and PDF exports are all driven by HTML+CSS. XML outputs have no styling.

Pressbooks is free and open software, released under the GPL v.2.0 license.

Oasis Search tool

Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) is a search tool that aims to make the discovery of open content easier. OASIS currently searches open content from 39 different sources and contains more than 100,000 records.

OASIS is being developed at SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library by Bill Jones and Ben Rawlins in collaboration with SUNY OER Services.
